Caroline Monnet - Anomalia - Oct. 14th through Nov. 18th. 2011

In Anomalia, multi media artist Caroline Monnet (Algonquin/French) extends the contextual relationships of fictional cultural figures and image in a new series of limited edition silkscreen prints.

Anomalia began as artist in residence at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin, 2010, where Monnet uncovered Winnetou, a fabricated character of Native decent created by the German Novelist Karl May.
Anomalia is both the deconstruction and a reconstruction of plastic stereotypes in image, allowing for potential alternative narratives.

The show runs from October 14th through November 18th, 2011
Hours for this show are by chance and appointment only. 204 930 5052

Paul Zacharias - August 26th

In REBELS Zacharias brings us a world of artists as terrorists, revolutionaries, and activists. Hunted by big brother and getting their love on the run, these rebels are a re-examination of the historically marginalized revolutionary. Here they are heroic radicals that exist in an arena of absolute necessity. Here they have not yet failed, never completely disbanded, never stopped believing in the cause…

Here, There & Nowhere Landscape paintings by Andrea von Wichert

HERE THERE & NOWHERE
Artist Andrea von Wichert Explores Landscape in Post-Human World

On October 29 at Golden City Fine Arts, multi-disciplinary artist Andrea von Wichert opens a new solo show of landscape paintings, based on travels to the Orient and deep into the Canadian wilderness. Unplugging from cell phones, the Internet, and traveling solo and silent to confront her subject matter, the show features paintings done en plein air in the field and worked up from photos.

Sitting outside at the mercy of bugs and inclement weather is the antithesis of visual experience in our technology-mediated view of the outside world, an act of absurdist rebellion. These paintings celebrate the joy and awe of the solitary human in the midst non-manipulated and manipulated nature, focusing on light, movement and the centuries-old technology of the paintbrush.

Andrea von Wichert has been painting in film and theatre for 15 years and has been fiercely making room for her own artistic practice for the last decade. Most infamous for her film collaborations with Arlea Ashcroft “Snapperdoodle—the Movie!!!’ and “Dead Mothers and Kitchen Floors”, von Wichert has also been recognized nationally as a writer and performer. Painting remains her most beloved spiritual discipline.

The exhibition runs from October 29 to November 25 at Golden City Fine Art, 211 Pacific Avenue.

Artist’s reception at 7:00 pm on the opening evening.

Gallery times are Tuesday and Wednesday 12:00 – 5:00 pm, Thursday and Friday 5:00 -8:00, weekends after noon, and by appointment....goldencityfineart@gmail.com 204.416.7789 or avw@mts.net 204.779.5162.

Vahsi Kan(a.k.a. Turkish First Blood) with Mondo Macabro’s Turkish Pop Cinema

Big Smash! Productions & cineflyer present:
Çetin Inanç’s Turkish First Blood (with Mondo Macabro’s Turkish Pop Cinema)
Friday, October 22, 2010 at 9PM
Golden City Fine Art
211 Pacific Avenue
Admission $5

Ever imagine Ted Kotcheff’s action blockbuster First Blood with Sly Stone taking out zombies? If so, look no further than Inanç’s sleazy, ultra-violent take on First Blood starring the one and only Cüneyt Arkin. This film comes with Inanç’s signature style of quirky sound effects, free-spirit editing, genre-mixing and is compete with Jerry Goldsmith’s original score.

Note: Due to the rarity of Vahsi Kan it is presented in crap-o-vision! Painstakingly subtitled in English for the first time ever by hardcore Turksploitation fans!

Mondo Macabro is a British television series based on the book Mondo Macabro: Weird & Wonderful Cinema Around the World by Pete Tombs. In Turkish Pop Cinema, Tombs and Starke explore the history of Turkish popular cinema. This documentary serves as an introduction to Turkish action, sex and fantasy films. It presents plenty of footage from the films themselves and contains several new interviews with Turkish film legends Yilmaz Atadeniz and Cüneyt Arkin (who stars in both Dünyayi Kurtaran Adam and Vahsi Kan). This film is guaranteed to whet your appetite for more Turkish cinematic gems!

Jesse Peterson & Chi Huyen Mai CHUNG TA DI

Jesse Peterson and Chi Mai’s CHUNG TA ĐI is a visual exhibition that bridges the gap between travel and fantasy. The experience of travel on personal modes of transportation is very private and one that acts as barrier to contemporary life. In this project, the artists play with the themes of perceived reality and fantasy and tune in with their subjects. Peterson’s paintings focus on modes of travel and altering reality to create fantastically impossible scenes. Chi’s photography crosses the barrier between her and her subjects allowing the viewer to enter a highly personal, rarely seen surreal glimpse of life in Vietnam.

Peterson states:

"The title CHUNG TA ĐI comes from a Vietnamese phrase meaning ‘Let’s go.’ In itself the phrase has a two possible meanings. It may invite others to share in experiences, or demand to leave unpleasant ones. It implies a start of something new, and begs the question ‘Where?’ In this project we are inviting the viewers to experience new exciting and/or impossible locations, and to think about the ways to get there."

Chi Mai is a Vietnamese photographer, writer and dedicated world traveler.
She has exhibited in Galleries in Singapore, Vietnam, and Cambodia. Her writing includes screenplays for film drama, television and documentaries as well as travel journals, magazine and newspaper articles in and around South East Asia. Her current headquarters is Saigon, Vietnam.

Jesse Peterson is a Canadian filmmaker, painter, and multimedia artist born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. His work has been exhibited, installed and screened nationally and internationally. For the last two years he has been creating new bodies of work in and around South East Asia. He lives in Saigon, Vietnam.
